As the quarantine continues due to the COVID-19 pandemic, those within the jewelry industry are finding ways to cope as well as to conduct business from the safety of their homes. One such jewelry designer is Katherine Kim from the fine fashion jewelry brand KatKim.

When asked in an interview with JCK about where KatKim is based as well as the quarantine, Kim replied, "I’m quarantining in Manhattan Beach, Calif., with my husband and two daughters. Before all this, we would usually see each other around 8 p.m. every day—so I really appreciate this time with them."

When asked to describe her work-life while being quarantined, Kim said, "For the most part, I’ve always worked from home, but having to simultaneously homeschool my two girls has been challenging. I honestly haven’t had much time to get anything done. The little time that I do have, I try to make it as productive as possible."

"We’ve been trying to mitigate the impact of the pandemic and are taking steps to adapt to the economic and consumer shifts that are happening," said Kim regarding how the pandemic has affected business plans for her brand in 2020 as well as the future. "Online presence is crucial—more than ever—so we’re putting more focus on our direct-to-consumer model and establishing meaningful virtual relationships."

When asked if the vast amount of free time has been good or bad for her creative outlets, Kim said, "I think this is a good time to step out of your comfort zone and try something new like a new workout, a recipe, or read a book you normally wouldn’t read. The point is to find ways to release dopamine, which usually comes from novelty and surprises that spark new inspiration and motivation."

"I’ve been using this opportunity to revisit old photos and watch videos I took of my travels," said Kim when asked about how she's been finding ways to mentally and physically decompress during the pandemic. "It’s been a rejuvenating source of inspiration for me to see them again and to feel physically transported. This is the imagination I want to immerse myself in right now. I take comfort in the past."

"I’m currently reading Letter to My Daughter by Maya Angelou," said Kim regarding her choice of entertainment during the quarantine. "She is so genuine and has the most comforting voice. I highly recommend it."
