Austin-based jewelry designer Kendra Scott ranks higher than pop stars Beyonce and Taylor Swift and designers Donna Karen and Diane Von Furstenberg on Forbes' list of richest self-made women.
The designer started her endeavor sixteen years ago with $500, making hand-beaded jewelry out of her bedroom while pregnant with her first child! She quickly moved into wholesale jewelry and later transitioned into retail after the recession. Today, there are 74 Kendra Scott retail stores around the United States and the line is also carried at Nordstrom, among other department stores. The company is worth a billion dollars.

Specializing in colorful beading, rhinestone encrusted drusy stones and delicate chains, Kendra Scott is geared towards affordable pieces. But there are some beautiful fine jewelry pieces on offer as well, set in 14 karat gold. Better still, the diamonds are conflict free and in compliance with the Kimberely Process.

We're saluting Kendra Scott today as a self-made entrepreneur and U.S. billionaire. My, what a far way she's come from her $500 startup.
